A Brief History of CCC

A Brief History Of Cropredy Cricket Club
There was certainly a cricket club in the 1920s and possibly before. We were founder members of the Banbury & District League and we played in that league and various knock out cups with the exception of the war years up until 1987.
Some of the most successful years were in the 1950s' when we won the Banbury League and the Banbury Advertiser Knock Out Cup in three successive years and were presented with commemorative trophies to mark those achievements(these trophies are on display in the clubhouse), as well as winning many other Cups. The 1960s' and 70s' were leaner times, as several of the more talented players retired.

The 1980's were the start of more fruitful times and winning ways returned. Some of the younger players developed, with particular success in 6 aside competitions, winning the Banbury League 6's on five consecutive occasions, 1981 to 1986. It was about this time that the standard of the Banbury League was falling and with some of the stronger sides leaving it was decided to join the Oxfordshire Cricket Association League. In 1988 we were placed in Division 3 and progressed to Division 1 in 1994. In that same year we won the Airey Cup. Originally started in 1890 the Airey Cup is thought to be one of the oldest cup competitions still being played. This victory was up to the present time probably the clubs greatest achievement. A 2nd X1 was formed in 1993 and after one year in the Banbury League followed the 1st X1 into the O.C.A.

In 1997 looking for a greater challenge the club applied for and were accepted to join the Cherwell League, which contained the top teams in 7 counties surrounding Oxfordshire. This same year saw the formation of a youth section and in 1999 we entered an under 13 side in the South Northants Youth League and in 2000 added an under 15 team.We have since added an under 11 side. This has probably been the best thing that has happened to the club, as it gives us a future and seeing the youngsters now progressing into mid-week League, 2nd X1 and even 1st X1 cricket is most rewarding.

Winter months
Not wishing to be idle during the winter, we have played in the Banbury Indoor League since in was founded in 1977. In that period we have won Division 1 & 2 and for the first time; as a result of our youth policy; we are fielding two teams in the league.

Tours
We have been on 5 tours over the last 12 years: Cornwall, Somerset x2, Wales and Hampshire and it is intended to arrange more in the future.

Grounds
The club had used several fields around the village; Claydon Road, by the canal, behind Andrews Farm and behind the railway; until 1950, when Long Meadow, by the river, was made available to share with the football club. The club remained there until 1973, when cricket generally was demanding better facilities than we were able to provide. The ground was still used for cattle and sheep, and other than the square we had no control over what happened to the rest of the field. Only rarely being able to mow it. An opportunity arose for the club to rent an excellent ground and facilities at Horton View in Banbury, from the local authority. We felt bound to go for this and enjoyed our years there until 1995, attracting some quality players along the way.

In 1995, what we had always hoped would happen, occurred. The Parish Council had the opportunity to purchase Long Meadow and build a pavilion with excellent facilities. We were able to return to the village and set about developing the club.

Within 3 years we had a non turf wicket laid on the square for use in bad weather, a purpose built brick score box, two non turf practice wickets and nets and a considerable array of equipment; including full pitch covers and site screens. All of this came to considerable total cost in excess of £25,000. This has been achieved with the generosity of Sponsors, Vice Presidents & Members and annual fund raising approx £4000 per year with Bonfire Nights, Fairport Barbecues etc. We also received grants from the Sports & Arts Foundation, Lord Taverners, The Lottery and Cherwell District Council.

We look forward to the future with optimism.
